Mike Humes and Chris Gilliland have just returned from a trip to camp. Everything looked beautiful under 5 feet of snow (with a little more expected). The only way to get around was by x-country skiing or on snow shoes – parking at the back gate and skiing everything into camp!
This wasn’t, however, a “vacation” trip – it was a chance to survey the buildings and docks to see how they have survived the winter. It was also an opportunity to meet with contractors to discuss and plan the remodeling of two cabins and the building of two new cabins.
The remodeling will take place to the Crescent Lodge (which housed the Cardinal and Eagle boys last year), Birch Lodge (which housed the Falcon girls last year), and to the Playhouse. Crescent Lodge will remain a camper cabin, however, Birch Lodge is to be converted into a new staff lodge and special camper activities building with ping-pong tables, a pool table, recreation room, and even a full kitchen (great news for the cooking club!). The Playhouse is getting a new look too – a new raised stage, which will make the viewing of our plays and talent shows much easier for all.
Look for the new cabin to occupy an area by the Arts and Crafts / Playhouse building, between Regis and Applejack camps. This new cabin will, more than likely, house a Regis group this year. The second cabin will house the Apprentice Counselors (ACs), who are campers involved in the second year of the Camper in Leadership Training (CILT) program.
With all this building and remodeling taking place, spring is going to be a very busy time – now we just need the snow to melt. Mike will be going up to camp the beginning of May to supervise the work. With our first session full, Chris will also be able to be up at camp early in May, and will continue working on full season and second half enrollment from there.
Look for all the exciting new changes when you arrive!
