Part of the Eagles and Falcon girls’ cabins combined to form a soccer team to travel to Camp Chateaugay for competition. The Camp Regis team ran into some stiff competition and lost 6-0. When measuring who the true winners were however, Regis dominated because they continuously played hard and never gave up. They demonstrated sportsmanship and pride. They accepted defeat without making excuses. Some of the girls were playing soccer for the first time, and some played unfamiliar positions. As the coach, I was quite proud of the team. Thanks to James and Debbie for helping on the trip!
August in athletics while the AJ IIs were on their week long trip was highlighted by the 5th Annual Ben & Jerry’s Soccer Tournament and by the basketball team’s spectacular 60-28 victory over Camp Chateagay, avenging an earlier 2-0 loss in soccer in July. Fifteen boys and one girl (Alexis Glodstein) played on the basketball team. The leading scorers were David Brown-Friedman, and Bryon Artwright, with point guard Michael Maynard leading in assists.
Over 75 campers on 5 teams played in the soccer tournament. It took six games in round robin play (each team playing until it had two losses) until a seventh and championship game was set between 2 undefeated teams, the Antelopes and the Dalmatians. In that game the Antelope came back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game, only to lose it in the final minutes 3-2 on a goal by Bryan Cartwright. Bryon and defensive star Adrienne Slater were named MVPs for the winning Dalmatians, while Gunnar Schmuser from West Germany was named MVP for their opponents. Gunnar had 8 goals in three games for the Coyotes. Everyone had a wonderful time during the tournament – the older campers showed great leadership while the younger campers played up in skill to the older ones. Congratulations to all.
