One of the pleasure of camp has always been the opportunity to hear birds calling and
leaves on the trees rustling in the breeze. For me as “the music man” here for a second year at camp, an additional pleasure has been once again hearing the sounds of recorders and guitars all around the camp as campers counselors take advantage of the chance to take up or brush up on an instrument.
With 13 guitars and twenty-something recorders in addition to various pianos and a few other instruments, almost everyone in a cabin group or class can take part as well as sign out instruments overnight.
I see my role as trying to stimulate musical activities of all sorts by enticing campers to try things: I want to make music so interesting that they can’t wait to get involved. So, back to where I began: coming back from sailing club I heard a lone recorder playing “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” Now that makes me happy.
