Camp Regis Applejack February Newsletter
I want to use the space this month to write about some new or expanded programs that we are really excited about for 2020.
Firstly, all of the hiking/canoeing/backpacking trips we did were a blast so we plan to offer more of those. Including multi-day backpacking and canoeing trips for overnight campers and more hikes and nature exploration for day campers.
Second, I have been in touch with David Goodman, whose brother, Andrew, was one of three Civil Rights workers murdered in Mississippi in 1964 while they were working on voting rights there. David, Andrew, and a number of their cousins all attended CRAJ as kids. Goodman Mountain outside of Tupper Lake has a plaque dedicated to Andrew at the base. David has agreed to come speak to our campers, perhaps as part of a day hike up Goodman Mountain. We may also do a book club where we read a Civil Rights-focused book and then discuss it with David. The Andrew Goodman Foundation has been working on voting rights for many years so we are excited to partner with them.
I have been in discussions with another CRAJ alum who is hoping to teach a ukulele building-workshop to interested campers. Although this is not yet finalized, I am very excited about the possibility and will send more details once the dates are set.
We also plan to expand our programming with two amazing local resources, the VIC and the Wild Center. We had some great day hikes at the VIC, as well as special events like a nighttime bat and moth-viewing walk. The Wild Center did a special live-animal presentation for us, in addition to a climate change program geared towards our older campers.
As always, we are open to ideas from enrolled families about what your kids like/what you as parents would like to see offered so please reach out to us with your thoughts. Give me a call at (919) 357-5533, or email me at director@campregisapplejack.com, for more details or if you would like to discuss our new initiatives.
Looking forward to seeing all our great campers this summer at Camp Regis Applejack!

Director Will Bettmann wrote a commentary on the importance of summer camp for the development of children’s soft skills. “Traditional summer camps are a much-needed boot camp for soft skills… The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) has found that the soft skills gap consists primarily of communication skills, problem-solving skills, and work ethic.” But teamwork, communication and work ethic are already inherently built into summer camps. You can read his post here.
Associate Director Emily Yancey wrote in a piece to Camp Business Magazine about CRAJ’s most impactful program. Do you agree with her that Sunday Morning Meeting is the most poignant program at Camp Regis Applejack? Read her piece here.

CRAJ Scholarship Fund
We are excited to announce the arrival of the CRAJ Scholarship Program. For 75 years we at Camp Regis Applejack have strived to bring in children from all backgrounds to experience camping. We are a firm believer in having no child left behind, and now we have a more sustainable way to ensure that. We are working with the American Camping Association to create this Scholarship Program to make sure that we can continue to provide CRAJ to all future generations, no matter their background.
