The Camp Regis Applejack property was bought from the dancers Gail Gardiner and Ruth Doing by Earl and Pauline Humes. Gardiner and Doing had used the property for their own sleepaway camp named the Gardiner-Doing Camp.
The women opened their camp shortly after the end of the first World War as an oasis for creative experience. They established their camp for young girls and boys, emphasizing the arts and progressive education.
