The harsh wind and misty rain did not stop the 1994 Regis Applejack staff from completing all the final tasks in preparation for the arrival of nearly 300 campers from all over the world and from across the United States on Tuesday. Although the weather “dampened” some of our diligent staff, none of the newly-arrived campers seemed to even notice the rain, the wind, or the mud. Shouts of joy...
In addition to our already existing, fabulous drama and dance programs, we have added a music program that looks to be something rather special. Kelly Deyo, a Music Education Major at SUNY Potsdam, will be working with both instruments, which can be easily transported to camp, should plan to bring their instrument and participate in this new program. We have plans to get together some instrument and choral performances for...
As if the new van mentioned in the March Newsletter was not enough, we now have a new 48 passenger bus. With the addition of this bus, trips out of camp will be undertaken with less of a “caravan” and more comfort to the campers and staff. We will be able to have more versatility in the Thursday “Bunk Day” trips – getting out to trailheads for a day of...
All Administrators Returning in 1994! Yes, it’s true, all senior staff administrators/supervisors will be returning for another summer. These are the people responsible for the staff training/supervision and counseling campers during the summer. They also do a multitude fo other jobs which include, but are not limited to: driving buses, cooking meals on Thursdays (cook’s day off), scheduling groups for activities and showers, driving ski boats, lifeguarding, leading singing at...
Camp has purchased a 12-passenger, white, Dodge van. With the addition of this vehicle to our existing fleet of 3 buses, 2 vans, and 2 station wagons, we will have a greater ability to take advantage of all the special programs offered around our Adirondack region during the summer. It will also provide us additional transportation to take campers to the trailheads and canoe drop-offs as we explore the mountains,...
Mike Humes and Chris Gilliland have just returned from a trip to camp. Everything looked beautiful under 5 feet of snow (with a little more expected). The only way to get around was by x-country skiing or on snow shoes – parking at the back gate and skiing everything into camp! This wasn’t, however, a “vacation” trip – it was a chance to survey the buildings and docks to see...
The American Camping Association (ACA) is the professional organization for camp administrators. It supports camps in many ways – from monthly publications to workshops and roundtable discussions. More important to you, the camp parent and campers, the ACA has set the high standards by which all camps should operate. Every three years, a camp is evaluated by a panel of camping professionals according to these standards. Last summer, Camp Regis...
At a commemoration held on Friday, July 16th, Camp Director Michael Humes dedicated the new pavilion to his father, Earl B. Humes, who founded Camp Regis with his wife Pauline in 1946. The dedication to Earl Humes – who died in 1982 – was a surprise from Michael to his mother. Several people in addition to Michael and Pauline shared memories of Earl Humes with staff, campers, and some parents...
