The Arts

Jul 15, 1994

Welcome campers, to Camp Regis Applejack’s Arts & Crafts corner. We have a lot of creative fun planned for the summer and can’t wait for all of you to get started. A few groups have already completed coil/pinch pots and have moved on to papier-mâché masks. Campers, however, are not the only ones learning crafts; quite a few Regis ladies have taught us counselors how to macramé bracelets. We invite...

Putting Trash In Its Place

Jun 12, 1994

The Regis Applejack Recycling Program is entering its third season, and our commitment to recycling is evident throughout camp, from the specially-labeled dumpsters to the official camp toilet tissue (recycled paper, of course!) Counselors and veteran campers will work together to help new campers familiarize themselves with the program so that recycling becomes a habit with everyone. We take pride in the comprehensiveness of our efforts; at Regis Applejack we...

Three New Lodges Open For 1994 Season

Jun 5, 1994

For the past several months, the denizens of Camp Regis Applejack have been serenaded by hammers, saws, drills and grinding gears. When the “music” stopped, our grounds boasted three new buildings, and a renovated playhouse. The new additions – Rainbow, Pathfinders, and Timbercrest Lodges – will house Regis campers and Apprentice Counselors respectively. The Playhouse now has a raised stage and a center curtain that will enhance summer productions. In...

Earth Care

May 11, 1994

BackgroundA growing number of products use nuts, leaves, and other natural materials that can be harvested from rainforests without threatening their survival. It’s up to us to provide the market for these products. Trees of Life– More than 1,700 species of birds inhabit the rainforests in Columbia alone, compared to the 700 species on the entire continent of North America.– More than 25% of prescription drugs are derived from rainforest...

Earth Care

Apr 22, 1994

April 22: Earth Day — April 29: Arbor Day Usually this column is used to provide you with useful information about caring for our planet. In this issue, we would like to provide you with some thoughts about “Earth Care” from one whose ancestors lived closely with the land. Born in 1868, Chief Luther Standing Bear spent his early years on the pains of Nebraska and South Dakota. At the...

ACA International Conference 1994

Mar 17, 1994

Mike Humes and George Bredig are back from the American Camping Association (ACA) International Conference which took place early March in Toronto, Canada. Besides the new information, both Mike and George said that one of the greatest benefits was the interaction with thousands of camping professionals from all over the world. The highlight of the conference was a performance by Peter, Paul, and Mary (minus Mary who was ill). They...

ACA Accredited Camp: What This Means to You

Mar 6, 1994

The American Camping Association (ACA) is the professional organization for camp administrators. It supports camps in many ways – from monthly publications to workshops and roundtable discussions. More important to you, the camp parent and campers, the ACA has set the high standards by which all camps should operate. Every three years, a camp is evaluated by a panel of camping professionals according to these standards. Last summer, Camp Regis...

The Apprentice Program

Jul 16, 1977

Around July 11th the Apprentice Program got under way. Campers who have been in Applejack before or who are over 15 years old are assigned in assisting group counselors and specialists. Coordinator of this program, with his many other talents is George Bredig. Some of the special programs they will be involved in as apprentices are working in the kitchen, infirmary, and office. The AJ’s seem to be really motivated...

Sunday Morning Meeting

Jul 8, 1977

By Katie Weisman Sunday morning meeting is a time once a week for thought and discussion. It is a time for quiet. Its purpose is for the campers and counselors to share their feelings openly without being embarrassed or ashamed. Some of the topics we chose this year were guilt, giving and receiving, goals setting and reaching, and leaving places. I think that out of all these topics, guilt was...
